(Humane Society Shelter in El Centro)....It is extremely overcrowded.
The shelter has a capacity of around 80 animals. They are currently housing 200. They are working on a solution to the problem. The shelter officials are looking at getting s new shelter. They are looking at a site. They will need public assistance to make the new shelter a reality. They must raise $12 million. That would pay for the new shelter to be set-up and operational. They have found a 2.5-acre site on South Hope Avenue. Phase one of the project would be to set up a shelter, including an administration building at a cost of $6.8 million. Phase two would be to expand the shelter, adding extra amenities including dog runs and a second building to house animals. The plan is to be able to break ground at the new site by December of this year.
