A structure fire early New Years Eve destroyed a Slab City encampment.

 Imperial County Fire Department responded to the fire in the area of 300 East Highline Canal Road at about 5:45 Wednesday morning. A second alarm was requested shortly after the first responders arrived. Firefighters were able to successfully stop the progress of the fire and extinguish the blaze. Law enforcement officers assisted with precautionary evacuations of nearby encampments. One person was displaced by the fire and the American Red Cross provided assistance to that individual. Cause of the fire remains under review.
