With the New Year hundreds of new laws will go into effect in California.

Beginning January 1, shoppers will have to buy a bag made of recycled paper or use their own reusable bags. Plastic bags are out. The law bans the thicker, reusable plastic bags that consumers were supposed to use more than once but often didn't.

Food delivery services such as Uber Eats and Door Dash will now be required to provide a full refund if an order is not delivered of if the wrong order is delivered. The services are also required to disclose a breakdown of pay, tips, and bonuses for the delivery drivers.

With the new year credit unions will be prohibited from charging overdraft fees or non sufficient funds fees of more than $14. A similar bill for banks took effect in 2025.

Another new law will prohibit SELL by dates Food manufacturers must use terminology like Best if Used by or Use or Freeze by dates. This law takes effect in July.
